Palisade gates: what to tell us before you order
We make them at our Merseyside yard, so almost anything is possible — but six decisions have to be made before a welder starts. Here they are, in order.
Palisade gates are made on site at our Merseyside yard rather than bought in, which means the listed sizes are a starting point and not a limit. It also means somebody has to make six decisions before a welder picks anything up, and if they are not on the order we will be ringing you.
1. Width — and whether that includes the posts
Our stated gate widths are the width of the gate frame, not including the posts or hinges. So a 4m gate needs more than 4m of opening. If the number you have is a clear opening between two existing posts or piers, tell us that, because it changes what we build.
Standard widths run 1m to 10m. Anything else, ring us — non-standard is normal here.
2. Single leaf or double
Below about 3m a single leaf is fine. Above that a double is usually better: two smaller leaves are easier to handle in wind, swing into less space, and put less load on any one hinge. A 6m single leaf is a lot of gate hanging off one post.
Where there is no room to swing at all, a bi-fold option is available on swing gates, and sliding gates avoid the problem entirely.
3. Hang and opening
Hang applies to single leaf gates only, and we define it as the side the hinge is on when you are stood outside the gate looking in. Say which side you want the hinge.
Then the swing: 90 degrees in and out, 180 in, or 180 out. This is worth checking against what is actually behind the gate. A 180-in gate needs clear space inside the fence line, and a lot of yards do not have it.

4. Height, measured properly
Gate height is from the ground to the top of the pales, and it includes a small clearance at the bottom so the gate can actually open. Match it to the fence it sits in — a 2.4m fence with a 1.8m gate in it is a 1.8m fence with a very obvious way in.
5. Post type
Dig-in as standard, with the posts supplied longer than the gate height to allow for it. Choose base-plated and we cut and plate them, though base plate bolts are an extra. Gate posts take far more load than fence posts, so if the slab is at all doubtful, dig them in.
6. Pales and finish
You can have W section or D section, triple-pointed or round-notched — match the fence, or don't, if the gate is meant to be a feature. Everything comes galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 as standard. Powder coating to virtually any RAL colour is an option; if you choose it, someone from our team will ring you to take the RAL number and give you the current coating lead time.

Sliding gates
Made to order, in house. Up to 2.4m high as standard and 1m to 10m clear opening, single or double leaf, in either pale section and either top profile. We can go to 3m high, but the transport gets awkward and it affects the price, so that one starts with a phone call.
Because each one is built to the opening, the bracing varies with the length and weight of the gate — the photos on the listing show how we normally make them rather than exactly what yours will look like.

- Can you make a palisade gate to a custom size?
Yes. All our palisade gates are made at our Merseyside yard, so non-standard widths, heights and locking arrangements are routine. Standard swing gates run 1m to 10m wide and 1.2m to 3.0m high; sliding gates go up to 2.4m high as standard.
