How to fit razor wire safely
Razor wire arrives under compression and unrolls with force. Gauntlets, two people and the right brackets are not optional — here is the sequence we give every customer.
Razor wire is shipped compressed and held with ties. Cut the ties without controlling the coil and it will open with real force, in a direction you did not choose, and it is covered in blades. Almost every injury we hear about happens in the first two minutes of the job, before anyone has fitted a single bracket.
What you need on site
- Razor wire gauntlets — one pair per person handling the coil, not one pair for the crew.
- Brackets — one per post. Straight angle brackets carry a coil above the line; Y brackets split it into two arms.
- Tying wire or razor wire clips, and pliers you do not mind ruining.
- Eye protection. The tape springs, and it springs at head height.
- A second person. Non-negotiable on concertina.

Fitting concertina razor wire
- Fit every bracket first, along the whole run, before the wire comes out of the packaging. Bolt them to the posts, check the line is straight by eye from one end, and make sure the arms all cant the same way.
- Decide which way the coil overhangs. Outward — over the approach — is the standard security profile and the one that deters. Inward is for boundaries where anything overhanging your neighbour's side would be a problem. Y brackets let you do both.
- Fix the free end of the compressed coil to the first bracket. Tie it properly, not temporarily. This is what stops the coil running away when the ties are cut.
- Cut the restraining ties one at a time, working along the coil, with the second person controlling the tension. Let it open at its own pace rather than pulling it.
- Walk the coil out along the brackets, tying it at every bracket as you go. Do not run the full length and then come back to tie it — an untied coil on a fence top is the most dangerous thing on the site.
- Thread a line wire through the coil and tension it at each fixing point. That is what holds the spacing even and stops the coil bunching.
Getting the tension right
A 10m roll covers about 10m of fence. It is tempting to stretch it further and save a roll — do not. Over-stretched concertina opens into gaps wide enough to work through, which is precisely the failure the wire was bought to prevent. If the coils are visibly spaced further apart than the diameter of the coil, you have pulled it too far.
Flat razor wire is easier
Flat razor wire fits in the plane of the fence rather than bulging out from it, so it needs no 90-degree bracket work on top of the run — a flat bracket to attach to is enough. Feed a wire through the tape and tighten at each fixing point. It is quicker, cheaper to install, and it does not overhang a footpath, which is why it has taken over on boundaries with public access alongside.

Mounting height and signage
Fit any bladed topping at least 2.4m above ground level, and check that height from both sides of the boundary — a fence that is 2.4m on your side and 1.5m on a bank behind it has not met the standard where it matters. Put warning signs at intervals along the run, visible from the approach. Neither is a statutory requirement, but both are what a court will look for when deciding whether an occupier took reasonable care.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need special gloves to fit razor wire?
Yes. Razor wire gauntlets are a specific product with a reinforced palm and a long cuff covering the forearm — ordinary rigger gloves will not stop the blades. Every roll we sell goes out with the same advice: handle it with proper gauntlets or do not handle it at all.
- Which way should razor wire face?
Overhanging the approach — the outside of the boundary — is the standard security profile, because it puts the barrier over the climber rather than over your own yard. Where an overhang onto a neighbour's land or a footpath would cause a problem, cant it inward, or use a Y bracket to run a coil on both arms.
- Can one person fit razor wire?
No. Concertina coils are shipped under compression and release with force when the ties are cut, and controlling that while tying off is a two-person job. Fitting it alone is how people end up in A&E.
- How far does a 10m roll of razor wire stretch?
About 10m of fence run. It can physically be pulled further, but the coils then open into gaps large enough to climb through, which defeats the purpose. Order to your run length plus an allowance for corners and returns.
