358 prison mesh: V beam or flat beam?

Same 12.7 x 76.2mm aperture, same 4mm wire, same security. V beam adds pressed ribs for stiffness; flat beam keeps a clean face. That is genuinely the whole difference.

358 is the highest-security mesh most sites will ever need, and the number is the specification: a 3 inch by 0.5 inch aperture on 8 gauge wire — 76.2mm by 12.7mm on 4mm steel. It is called prison mesh because that is where it started, and it turns up now on substations, water treatment works, data centres, rail and anywhere copper theft is a live problem.

Why the aperture does the work

Two things make 358 hard to get through. The hole is too small to get a toe or fingers into, so there is nothing to climb. And it is too small to get the jaws of a bolt cropper around a single wire, so cutting it means working at it with a grinder — loud, slow, and visible.

Combine that with 4mm wire and you have a fence that resists both of the ways people actually get through mesh. Nothing else in the rigid mesh range comes close.

So what does the beam do?

Both our 358 systems use the same aperture, the same 4mm galvanised wire and the same 2.5m panel width. The difference is whether the panel is pressed with V-shaped ribs.

V beam

The pressed ribs stiffen the panel the same way a folded palisade pale is stiffer than a flat one. That matters most at height — a 3m panel has a lot of unsupported area, and the beams are what stop it flexing. It also gives nothing flat to lean a ladder against, which is a small but real benefit.

Flat beam

No ribs, so a flatter and quieter-looking fence. At 1.8m and 2.0m the extra stiffness of the V beam is not doing much anyway, so flat beam is the sensible pick at those heights, and it is the one to choose where the boundary is visible and the ribbed look would be wrong.

Choosing between them

  • At 3m, V beam — the stiffness is genuinely doing something at that height.
  • At 1.8m or 2.0m, flat beam — cheaper, tidier, and no loss of security.
  • At 2.4m, either. Decide on appearance.
  • Matching an existing run — match what is there.

Posts, panels and fixings

358 is supplied as a system: post, panel, prison mesh clips, insert bolts and a post cap, with the clip count matched to the height. Panels are 2.5m rather than the 3m of the lighter systems — worth remembering when you count bays, because it changes the arithmetic.

The fixings are security bolts and need a mesh security key to undo, which is the point: a fence this hard to cut should not be removable with a socket set.
