A nut with a hex head designed to shear off once tightened, leaving a smooth cone that can't be gripped by a spanner. Makes palisade fixings tamper-proof.

A snap-off nut, or shear nut, has a hexagonal head that is designed to break away at a set torque. Tighten it and the head shears off, leaving a smooth domed cone with nothing for a spanner or a socket to grip.
That is the whole point. A palisade fence held together with ordinary nuts can be quietly unbolted from the outside with a socket set; one held together with snap-off nuts cannot be taken apart without an angle grinder, which is loud, slow and visible. Every M8 pale fixing and M12 fish plate fixing on our palisade uses them.

- How do you remove a snap-off nut?
With an angle grinder — that is the point of them. Once the hex head has sheared there is nothing left to grip, so plan on cutting the bolt off and replacing it. Get the fence lined up before you tighten them.
