A single course of sleepers laid flat has nothing holding it down. Soil pushes, frost lifts, a mower nudges it, and by the second summer a straight edge has gone wavy. The pin fixes to the back face of the sleeper and drives into the ground, so the run stays where you put it.

Pin or retaining post?

A pin holds a low run in position. It is not a retaining system: once you are stacking sleepers to hold back soil, the load needs steel retaining posts, which take the sleepers in a channel and carry the weight properly. Rule of thumb — one course flat, use pins; anything you would call a wall, use posts.
