A sleeper is the simplest way to build something in a garden that lasts. One length gives you 2.4m of wall, bed edge or step in a single lift, with no mortar, no formwork and no waiting for anything to cure.

What people build with them

Raised beds and planters, retaining walls and terracing on a sloping garden, driveway and border edging, steps, sandpits, log stores and garden furniture. They handle a change of level better than almost anything else at the price.

Green or brown?

Both are tanalised to the same job, so the choice is colour rather than durability. Green is the traditional treated look and greys off over a couple of seasons. Brown reads as a finished timber from day one and suits a garden where the sleepers are meant to be seen rather than blend in.

Building with them properly

For anything above a course or two, use steel retaining posts rather than relying on the timber alone: the sleepers drop into the channel and the steel takes the load, with an intermediate post along the run, an end post to finish and a corner post at each turn. For a single course laid flat, a sleeper pin through the back will stop it wandering.
