Specifying pedestrian guard rail

Pedestrian guard rail does the opposite job to crash barrier. Crash barrier keeps vehicles out of the pedestrian space; guard rail keeps people out of the traffic space — the low railings at crossings, school gates, bus stops and busy junctions that stop somebody stepping off the kerb where they should not.
Ours are designed and manufactured in house, in two styles, PG1 and PG2.

12mm bars at 110mm centres leaves just under 100mm clear between bars. Panels are 2m, so a run is set out in whole panels and the odd length gets made to suit rather than cut on site.

The letterbox option
The upper 'letterbox' gap is a horizontal opening near the top of the panel. It exists so drivers can see a child standing behind the railing at a crossing, and so pedestrians waiting can see approaching traffic through it. On a crossing approach it is usually worth having; on a plain length of footway railing away from a junction it is not.
Fixing
Panels go in dig in or bolt down. Dig in for a new footway or verge where you can break ground; bolt down where the panel is landing on an existing slab or a finished pavement that nobody wants dug up. Bolt down puts the load into the anchor fixings, so the same caution applies as anywhere else — the concrete has to be sound at each fixing point.
