A coach bolt has a domed head and a square collar under it that bites into timber as the nut is tightened, so the bolt holds itself while you work from one side. It is the standard fixing for anything structural going through a wooden post.

Choosing a length

Measure the total thickness the bolt has to pass through and add enough to get the nut and washer on with a couple of threads showing. Too long is untidy and too short will not pull up, so if you are between sizes, go up.
